On the inside the Cruze shines, materials are class leading and look and feel great. The seats are comfortable but also have great side support. The only thing that seems amiss is the funny cloth material on the dash on the LT models. Worse yet the vinyl you get on the base LS. Still all things considered this is one of the best interiors in its class. For safety you get 10 yes, 10 standard air bags. Much more than the standard 6 you can expect from the Hyundai Elantra or Honda Civic. Another interesting and unique feature is the use of knee air bags. In a frontal collision they deploy to prevent knee injury as a result of hitting the lower part of the dash. Heating and ventilation controls are simple and easy to use. They don't have the artistic flair you find on some vehicles like the Hyundai Elantra but they should be fine for most people. The steering wheel can be adjusted by way of tilting or telescoping. The LT trim level will have the option of USB and bluetooth connectivity. It can also be had on the lower level LS. All Cruzes come with a good complement of features even the base LS has power windows and door locks as well as keyless entry. As you work your way up the model line to LS+ package you get air conditioning and the improved graphic display like in the LT model. Move up to the LT you get cruise control, heated mirrors as well as better trim inside and out. Also included in the LT package is the 1.4L turbo engine upgrade. The bulk of Cruzes seem to be sold in the LT trim level.

On the road the Cruze is fun but well-behaved. The suspension is firm but not jarring. The interior is quite and feels very solid even over rough roads. Handling is good due to what Chevrolet calls "z-link" rear suspension. Simply put this suspension setup allows the Cruze to keep both rear wheels planted on the ground in spite of abrupt maneuvers or changes in road surfaces. The result is a driving experience that feels more like a premium vehicle than an economy car. Steering feel is too light to be called sporty but is easy to use and feels good. What may disappoint a lot of drivers is the choice of engines. The 1.8L standard engine is adequate but not great, it lacks low-end torque. As base engines go it is sufficient. The 1.4L turbo is the odd one here. It has the same 136 hp output as the 1.8L but has 148 foot lbs of torque compared to the 1.8's 125 foot lbs. This does not sound impressive on paper, and guess what it isn't in real life either. The engine has enough power to merge and perform other daily functions but feels over worked under acceleration. It isn't enough to ruin the car but it keeps it from being the best it could be. The 6 speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and has a manual mode that makes it more fun. The 6 speed manual is an absolute gem that shifts very nicely, it feels like it came off a car that is twice the price. If GM ever decides to put the 2.0L turbo from the Buick Regal in the Cruze mated to the 6 speed manual, they will have a recipe for a killer sport compact. Fuel economy is good but not class leading like the Hyundai Elantra.

Do you remember the Cavalier? GM hopes you don't, but we all do. If you never owned one you probably knew someone who did. The Cavalier came to represent everything that was wrong at GM; uninspired handling, anemic power train and an interior that could have only been designed by an accountant. Well those days are gone. We hope forever. Enter the Chevrolet Cruze in 2011, everything you thought you knew about a small GM car was turned upside-down. Nice looks, great interior and sporty handling what wasn't there to like? As we look back on 2011 it looks as though GM finally got it right. For 2012 the Cruze remains largely unchanged. A few notable differences are the availability of a manual transmission with the 1.4L turbo and no more tilt adjustable front seats without the power option. In its first year the Cruze has done remarkably well, lets look how it stacks up in 2012.

The bottom line: A great value for money at its price point. While not the most exciting in its class the quality and safety make up for it.
